Choose an audience promise

In CLOUT, your opening audience choice establishes a lane: laughter, useful ideas, authenticity or care. Choose the one that fits your character or fictional brand. Then keep that promise recognisable while changing the specific story.

An imagined food creator could promise practical cooking ideas. Compare “Here’s my dinner” with “One pan, three lunches: what I made from Sunday’s leftovers.” The second tells a potential follower what they could get from stopping. It is an illustrative writing exercise, not a guaranteed scoring trick.

Match the strategy to the task

Regular followers already know you. Discovery aims at strangers. Customer-focused posts may reach fewer people while producing useful fictional enquiries. Decide which job this post should do before choosing its visual and voice.

A helpful mini-guide and a personal story can both serve the same audience promise in different ways. Repeating an identical post gives you less to learn. Try changing one deliberate element, then read the response in context.

Run the challenge

1. Choose a lane and write a specific opening with one clear benefit or point of interest.
2. Choose a matching visual and audience strategy. Read the cash and energy costs.
3. Publish and compare reach, engagement, followers and trust.
4. In the next post, change one choice and explain why. Repeat across the chapter.

The game includes chance, and its rules do not fully understand your writing. One result cannot isolate what caused success. Use the exercise to practise making and explaining choices.

All engagement is simulated. The useful question is what you would learn from a real audience, not whether a fictional score proves your idea will go viral.
